Too Many Invitations
Have you ever had a week where you were invited to several events all happening at the same time and you needed to make an executive decisions as to what event was most important to attend? Believe it or not that same scenario is being played out 100's of times a day in your life. From the moment you wake up invitations are being presented. "Come here and do this and you'll feel so much better". "If you would only spend that money you don't have on yourself, you'd feel better." "You really need that vacation even if it means you can't afford it then you'll feel better." "If you would just sit yourself down in front of that computer screen and fill your mind with pornographic images then you'll feel better." "If only you had a better job or a newer car or a better house then you'd feel better." In the midst of all these invitations there is another one being given to you moment by moment. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
All these invitations are promising some kind of rest or satisfaction and yet once you've engaged in whatever your invited to you still feel weary and unsatisfied. Augustine once said, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you."
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you today to hear the Saviour's invitation louder than all other invitations. When other invitations pull for your attention make an executive decision to stay at the feet of Jesus and find true rest.
