Getting serious about writings songs for the church
Over the last little while I’ve had a growing sense that I need to steward the gifts God has graciously given me. One of those gifts is writing songs for the global church to sing. I always seem to have good intentions when it comes to songwriting but then I always seem to come up with great excuses as to why I’m not able to write.
Here’s a few of my good intentions…
I’m going to set aside 4 hours per week to write because I’m not being a good steward of this gift. I’m going to read more old books and hymnals to give me thoughts and ideas. I’m going to listen to more music so I learn from others who do this way better than I do. This is just a sampling.
Here’s a few of my excuse…
I’m a husband, a father of 6. There’s baseball two nights per week, taekwondo two nights per week. I’m a pastor. Every week there’s community group, counseling and the list goes on. I oversee several ministries in the church, I try to stay a little fit, and I’m sure there’s more that I’m just not thinking about right now. I regularly invite people over for hospitality but then realize I don’t even have any free nights. How in the world could I ever expect to write songs?
See the dilemma
Bottom line… if God has called me to this task it’s time to roll up my sleeves and get busy. My son Joel is moving back to BC in a few weeks and we plan on writing more songs than we have in the past. He’s one of my favorite songwriters and I love co-writing with him. My son Josh is also writing some great melodies. I look forward to seeing his name on some of our new songs.
We plan on making them available to you on the site. We’ll make a video and post the chord chart. Our prayer is that you and your local church will be strengthened and encouraged in your faith, that you will love Jesus more as you sing our songs and that we will be found faithful in what God has called us to do.
Let the writing begin! Stay tuned for our next song…
